Organized by Cora Seeds, the event brought together growers, technicians, and professionals from the horticultural sector for a strategic discussion on new market demands, climate challenges, and innovative solutions for the future of leafy vegetables.

During the open day, new varietal research programs focused on rocket salad, lettuce, and baby leaf products were presented, with particular attention given to disease resistance, shelf life, visual quality, and adaptability to the fresh-cut industry. Experimental trials set up inside ALTAMURA OP’s greenhouses allowed participants to closely observe innovative varieties already available on the market as well as advanced genetic lines currently under development.

One of the key topics discussed during the event was the increasingly strategic role of innovation within the baby leaf sector. International markets today require products capable of ensuring production continuity, high visual quality, extended post-harvest shelf life, and stronger resistance to climatic and phytosanitary stress. Research is particularly focused on varieties tolerant to diseases such as downy mildew and fusarium, which are becoming increasingly important for the sustainability of agricultural production.

The Piana del Sele area once again confirmed its position as one of Europe’s leading hubs for baby leaf and fresh-cut vegetable production. Within this highly specialized agricultural district, ALTAMURA OP has become a benchmark organization thanks to a supply chain focused on quality, innovation, and international development. Today, the organization exports more than 90% of its production and continues investing in the development of new products and advanced production technologies.

Hosting technical events of this level further confirms ALTAMURA OP’s commitment to fostering dialogue between research, agriculture, and the market. Collaboration with seed companies, agronomists, and supply chain operators is considered essential for addressing the new challenges facing the fruit and vegetable sector and for building a more sustainable and competitive production model.

The event also included discussions on technological innovation, agricultural mechanization, and the evolving needs of processors and modern retail distribution. These trends are significantly transforming the fresh-cut sector and require increasingly high-performing and flexible varieties capable of responding quickly to changing consumer demands.

For ALTAMURA OP, initiatives like this represent not only an opportunity for professional exchange, but also a way to strengthen the role of the Piana del Sele area as a center of agricultural excellence, varietal innovation, and sustainable production within the European fruit and vegetable industry.

ALTAMURA OP hosted an important technical event dedicated to innovation in the baby leaf sector at its production site in the Piana del Sele area.
